For years, the “Stiftung Bildung und Handwerk” (Education & Craft Foundation) with all its institutions has committed itself successfully to the promotion of small and medium-sized businesses. In view of this background, it, along with the West German Conference of Chamber of Crafts and the Chamber of Crafts of East Westphalia of Bielefeld, has taken the initiative to found a privately-owned university for SME’s.

The “Fachhochschule des Mittelstandes” (University of Applied Sciences of SME’s) trains students to become skilled and executive workers, managers and entrepreneurs for SME’s. With application-orientated courses, the university prepares students for professional and entrepreneurial work which requires scientific findings and methods. In addition to pure knowledge transfer, there is practical experience through projects, the development of ideas individually, as well as training of personal and interdisciplinary skills.

In close cooperation with businesses, associations and public institutions, the university implements scientifically well-grounded academic programmes and advanced vocational education as well as research and development projects.

The university degrees are nationally and internationally recognised.

The university’s current offering of academic programmes includes undergraduate courses in Business Administration, Health Management, Trade Management, Media Communications and Journalism as well as Media Management.
